Kantenwein Football School
Gulf Coast University Florida.
Well its
better late than never but I have finally got time to report on my visit to
Florida Gulf Coast University, compliments of Juergen Kantenwein & his German
football school. I have been associated with Juergen & his football school for
over 10 years, enjoying & working with his groups of players & coaching staff
not only in the UK & Germany but now in Florida. Tough life but someone had to
do it....
The first week in the States was a total wash out with hurricanes piling up off the coast, so we made use of the time by escaping to bush gardens up near Orlando & away from the coast to avoid being blown away.
The weather for the second week was brilliant (nearly too hot!) so the camp got underway in temperatures up in the 100s but in typical German style it was no excuse for not working hard & playing football. The University facilities were the best I have ever had the pleasure of working with. Pitches were academy status & the accommodation & food was excellent.
The Kantenwein philosophy is so different to the English & FA coaching system. In part I would like to see more of their coaching style implemented in the UK, I certainly have taken a lot of their methods & added it into my own coaching. Technical development is Key & their is no moving on until basics have been achieved. The results & improvement in a week were remarkable, with every player assessed daily & all task were timed. This type of coaching is not for all, it is certainly geared up for the serious footballer but I wouldn't expect anything less from the discipline of the Germans.
