U/17 Report.

ARSENAL 7 - 1 WOLVES

Saturday 26th April.

The purpose of my visit this morning to "London Colney" home of the gunners training centre was to catch up with PSA player "Gareth Musson", now Wolverhampton Wanderers. And as usual it was a great day out & for anyone who has ever had the pleasure of visiting these facilities will know exactly what I mean. PSA visit many clubs each year, some fair, some excellent but the moment you arrive at the electronic gates of the gunners you soon realize you are entering the spoils of one of the worlds most successful football clubs. Security is extremely tight even for a U/17 youth match & I suppose it's too be expected when the whole team virtually boast a International in just about every position. Even before a ball has been kicked you cant help but admire the quality of the many surrounding pitches, even the layout appears purposeful & organised, it reeks with respect. With all this to take in I was begining to wonder if the quality of the game could ever live up to the quality of the facility but believe me today's game certainly did. Gareth whom I last saw was aged 13 & at the time was training overtime with Steve Murray, training on a bumpy Rooball pitch down at Mitchelton SC. The dream of playing someday at the highest level was evident back then & there is no doubt that the dream is still truly alive.

Unfortunately today's result did not go his way but he still managed to get on the score sheet after going 3 down just 20 minutes in. Playing as a lone striker he was rarely given any service. The 7-1 scoreline was largely due to a display of individual brilliance from one player who we will no doubt be hearing a lot more of over the next few years "Quincy Owusu-Abeyie" or "Quincy" in short. He was truly outstanding & responsible for scoring 6 of Arsenal's 7 goals. The Arsenal striker was with Dutch giants AJAX, he had been with them for the past 9 years before signing with the gunners. This guys finishing today was breathtaking & I recommend you keep an eye out for this kid. I must also add that Gareth was not the only Australian flying the flag today, ex Queensland Captain "Neil Kilkenny" was playing & was also looking very much at home in the centre of the Arsenal midfield, he was instrumental in setting up the elusive Arsenal striker on more than one occasion. After the match I managed to catch up with Gareth for a short while so hopefully we can get an up close & personal on the web shortly.

Jeff Haydon.
